Varicose veins are dilated, tortuous veins that generally appear on the legs and thighs. They result from poor venous return, leading to blood stagnation and loss of elasticity in the vein walls. As well as being visible, they can cause a sensation of heaviness, pain or swelling.
Varicose veins are caused by poor blood circulation in superficial veins. Normally, veins contain valves that prevent blood from flowing back down under gravity. When these valves fail, blood collects in the veins, causing them to swell and appear under the skin.
A number of factors can contribute to their appearance:
– Genetic factors: A family predisposition to venous disorders.
– Ageing: A loss of tone in the vein walls over time.

– Pregnancy: Increased blood volume and pressure on pelvic veins can favour the appearance of varicose veins.

– Varicosities: Small, fine, branched veins, often confused with telangiectasias, visible on the thighs, legs or ankles.
– Reticular varicose veins: Veins larger than spider veins, often located behind the knees or on the calves.
– Deep varicose veins: Located deeper under the skin, they can be painful and cause circulatory complications.
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a sclerosing agent directly into the vein concerned, causing it to close gradually and be absorbed naturally by the body.
