Rosacea

Rosacea: Understanding and Treating

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by persistent redness, visible small blood vessels (telangiectasias), and sometimes inflammatory flare-ups in the form of small papules. It primarily affects the face—specifically the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead—and can be triggered by various factors such as heat, stress, or certain foods. Although it is not dangerous to one’s health, rosacea can have a cosmetic impact and affect self-confidence.

Why does rosacea develop?

Rosacea is caused by a dysfunction of the blood vessels, which leads to hyperreactivity to external stimuli such as changes in temperature, sun exposure, or certain spicy foods. It is often exacerbated by genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors, and can be triggered by an excessive inflammatory reaction in the skin. Over time, the accumulation of redness and dilated blood vessels can become more visible and permanent.

What are the different types of rosacea?

– Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: Characterized by persistent redness on the face (erythema) and the presence of small dilated blood vessels (telangiectasias). The skin may also be more sensitive and reactive to external stimuli.

– Papulopustular rosacea: This type resembles acne, with red papules and pustules (small lesions filled with pus) on the cheeks, chin, and forehead. Unlike acne, there are no blackheads, and underlying redness is common.

– Phymatous rosacea: Less common, it causes thickening of the skin and an increase in tissue volume, often around the nose (rhinophyma). It primarily affects men and can develop gradually.

Recommended Treatments

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Thanks to its regenerative growth factors, PRP promotes cellular repair, strengthens the skin barrier, and reduces chronic inflammation, resulting in skin that is more resilient and less reactive.

Exfoliation

For rosacea, chemical peels are used gently and carefully to promote cell renewal and improve the skin’s texture and radiance without irritating it. When appropriately indicated, it can help improve skin tolerance, even out skin tone, and support the overall health of sensitive skin prone to redness.

Lumecca Peak

This intense pulsed light (IPL) technology targets redness and dilated blood vessels, effectively reducing the appearance of telangiectasias and evening out the complexion. It also helps soothe inflammation by improving blood circulation beneath the skin.
