Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis: Understanding and Treating

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excessive sweating, even in the absence of intense physical activity or high ambient temperatures. It can be localized (for example, in the armpits, hands, or feet) or generalized. This can lead to social discomfort and skin problems.

Why does hyperhidrosis occur?

Hyperhidrosis occurs when the sweat glands are overstimulated by the nervous system. It can be linked to genetic factors, hormonal disorders, infections, or even stress and anxiety. In some cases, hyperhidrosis is primary (with no apparent cause), but it can also be secondary to underlying medical conditions.

What are the different types of hyperhidrosis?

-Primary hyperhidrosis: excessive sweating with no apparent medical cause.

-Secondary hyperhidrosis: caused by another medical condition or the use of certain medications.

Recommended Treatments

Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin treatment temporarily blocks the nerve signals that stimulate the sweat glands. By injecting the toxin into the affected areas (such as the underarms, hands, and feet), we can significantly reduce sweat production, providing long-lasting relief from hyperhidrosis.

Morpheus8 Burst

This fractional radiofrequency treatment, used in conjunction with botulinum toxin, helps tighten and tone the skin in the affected areas, while also reducing the sweat glands responsible for hyperhidrosis. It can be used to treat areas that are less responsive to botulinum toxin.

What to expect during your consultation

During your first visit, we’ll conduct a thorough evaluation to better understand the extent of your hyperhidrosis and its impact on your daily life. This consultation includes a discussion of your medical history, lifestyle, and any treatments you’ve tried in the past, if applicable.

Thanks to their expertise as primary care nurse practitioners (IPSPL), Vicky and Kim can make a more accurate diagnosis and ensure that no underlying medical conditions are involved. If necessary, they can recommend a medical evaluation to rule out hormonal imbalances or other conditions that may contribute to excessive sweating. This comprehensive approach allows them to safely tailor treatment to your specific situation.

Once this assessment is complete, we’ll work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. In most cases, it involves injecting botulinum toxin into the affected areas (underarms, hands, feet, or scalp). We’ll take the time to explain the treatment protocol, the expected results, how long the effects will last, and the number of sessions needed to maintain optimal comfort.
