Urinary Incontinence

Urinary Incontinence: Understanding and Treating

Urinary incontinence is characterized by involuntary leakage of urine, which can occur during physical exertion, when laughing, when coughing, or as a result of a sudden, urgent urge that is difficult to control. Although common, this condition is often considered taboo and can have a significant impact on quality of life, self-confidence, and intimate well-being.

Many people put off seeking medical advice, believing that these symptoms are normal or unavoidable. However, effective, non-invasive solutions are now available to improve bladder control and restore greater comfort in daily life.

Why does urinary incontinence
occur?

Urinary incontinence is most often caused by weakened or poorly coordinated pelvic floor muscles, which play a key role in bladder control.

Over time, several factors can contribute to this weakening: pregnancy and childbirth, hormonal changes—particularly during menopause—aging, certain surgeries, or repeated straining. When the pelvic muscles can no longer adequately support the bladder, leakage may occur.

What are the different types of urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence does not manifest in the same way in all patients. There are three main types:

– Stress incontinence: leakage that occurs when laughing, coughing, sneezing, or during physical activity.
– Urge incontinence: a sudden, intense urge to urinate, which can sometimes be difficult to control.
– Mixed incontinence: a combination of stress incontinence and urinary urgency.

Identifying the type of incontinence helps guide treatment options.

Recommended treatment

EMSELLA®

EMSELLA® is a non-invasive treatment designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles using high-intensity electromagnetic technology. By inducing deep, repeated muscle contractions, EMSELLA® effectively strengthens this area, which is difficult to target through voluntary effort.

This treatment is recommended to improve urinary control, reduce leakage, and support pelvic muscle tone—without surgery, needles, or recovery time. It can also help improve comfort and intimate well-being.

What to expect during your consultation

The EMSELLA® treatment begins with a comprehensive medical evaluation conducted by one of our physicians or a nurse practitioner specializing in primary care (IPSPL). This step helps us understand your symptoms, your health status, and your goals, so we can confirm that the treatment is right for you and develop a personalized treatment plan.
